About Black River Area Chamber of Commerce
Serves as the chamber and visitor bureau for Black River Falls and Jackson County, promoting the area as "Black River Country" along Interstate 94. Resources include a business directory covering lodging, food and drink, retail, health and community services, plus guides to recreation such as ATV/UTV routes, hiking, fishing, kayaking, disc golf, snowmobiling and scuba diving at Lake Wazee, Wisconsin's deepest inland lake. The chamber runs member programs including Chamber Bucks, Helbling Scholarships, an annual dinner and meeting, and community events like the Trail of Terror, Small Business Saturday and the Karner Blue Butterfly Princess Program. Visitors can order a visitor guide, browse maps and trail guides, and view a calendar of area events.
The chamber's site recounts the history of the area rather than of the organization: Black River Falls became the seat of Jackson County in 1853 and grew as a center for logging, trade and early settlement in western Wisconsin. In 1872 it became the first village in Wisconsin to establish a free public library. The original falls that gave the city its name were washed out in a 1911 flood, at the site where the downtown dam now stands.
