SMS Terms and Conditions

These terms govern the text messages sent by The Black Business Directory ("THEBBD," "we," "us"). How we handle the information involved is described in our SMS Privacy Policy.

Program name and description

Program name: The Black Business Directory — Business Claim Verification.

THEBBD operates a directory of Black-Owned businesses. A business owner who wants to take control of their listing submits a claim on thebbd.black, providing a link to the business's Google Business Profile, a screenshot of that profile, a phone number, and an email address. No account is needed to start a claim.

To confirm the claim is genuine, we text a one-time verification code to the phone number publicly listed on that Google Business Profile. The phone number is always verified first. Only after it is verified do we create a business account from the email address given and send a confirmation email to it — if the phone number is never verified, no account is created and we do not email you. We also text the outcome once the claim is decided.

These are transactional messages only. We do not send marketing or promotional text messages.

Message frequency

Message frequency varies, and depends on how many claims you submit — typically one to three messages per claim. We do not send recurring messages.

Cost

THEBBD does not charge for these messages. Message and data rates may apply, depending on your plan and carrier.

How to stop messages, and how to get help

Reply STOP to cancel. You will receive one final message confirming you have been unsubscribed, and no further texts will be sent unless you opt in again by submitting a new claim.

Reply HELP for help. You can also email [email protected] or call (919) 449-5141.

Opting out of texts does not close your account and does not stop email or in-app notifications, which you can manage in your account settings.

Carriers

Carriers are not liable for any delayed or undelivered messages. Delivery is not guaranteed and depends on your carrier and device.

Consent

We send these messages only to people who ask for them. Consent is collected on the business-claim form through a checkbox that is not pre-selected. To reach the form, open any unclaimed listing on thebbd.black and click "Claim This Business." The whole flow, the checkbox as it appears, and the messages we send are documented at thebbd.black/sms-optin.

Consent is optional. The claim form can be submitted without it. Consent to receive text messages is not a condition of purchase or of using any part of THEBBD, and it is never bought, sold, or obtained from a third party — we message only people who initiated a claim with us directly. If the box is left unchecked we do not text you at all: the claim goes to a human reviewer and every reply comes by email.

This is the exact wording shown next to the checkbox, reproduced here because the form itself is inside the web application:

I agree to receive SMS text messages from THEBBD about this claim: a one-time verification code sent to my business's publicly listed phone number, and updates about the claim. Optional — you can submit without this.

Privacy

Our SMS Privacy Policy explains what we collect for messaging, how it is used, and who it is shared with. No mobile information is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.
