About BLACQSKIRT The Design House

A woman-focused clothing label selling hand-crafted and self-manufactured garments alongside wholesale and up-cycled pieces, in sizes Small through 3X. The collection includes Boho Genie pants, Rebel tops, harem skirts, and maxi and tie-up dresses, designed to fit curvier body types. Items are sold through the online boutique and at pop-up appearances.

The brand began in 2005 when founder Sherri, after more than a decade working in retail, could not find clothing that fit her body type and partnered with her mother, Sybil Lyles, whose sewing experience spans over 50 years. Their first black skirt was made in 2005, and by 2007 BLACQSKIRT, The Design House was official, selling online and at curated vendor events and pop-ups in Philadelphia, DC and NYC. The company incorporated in 2009 and opened a brick-and-mortar store in Mount Airy, Philadelphia in 2015. After marking 20 years in business in 2025, the shop closed after a decade and the brand now operates online and through pop-ups. The site describes the business as Black-owned.
