About Red Rice Books
Red Rice Books is a Black, woman-owned bookstore founded by KG and Vanessa with a mission to deepen Black folks' connection to food, food systems, and global food sovereignty, honoring the past while cultivating a more just future. KG describes herself as a proud Afro-Carolinian who loves rum and folk music and is "addicted to feeding minds and bodies," while Vanessa comes from a lineage of farming folks and kitchen chemists whose genius, in her words, is homegrown and community fed. That blend of literary passion and food culture defines the store's identity, summed up in its tagline: "Fresh Lit. Nourishing Goods. Rooted Encounters." The shop's curated selection of "Fresh Literature" spans fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, science fiction, horror, mystery, romance, and children's and young adult titles, alongside specialized collections in cookbooks, herbalism, spirituality and healing, queer reads, and vegan and vegetarian living, with audiobooks also available.
