About Seagull Bay - A Lakeside Motel
Three lodging properties in Bayfield sit above Lake Superior: Seagull Bay Motel, Bay West next door, and The Brownstone Cottage on the Bay West grounds. All have views of the lake and the Apostle Islands, private or shared balconies, and direct access to The Brownstone Trail, which leads into town on foot in about ten minutes. Rooms are described as mid-century modern in style, and a free shuttle to Big Top Chautauqua stops in the parking lot. The orchards are about a five-minute drive, with kayaking, sailing, hiking, and mountain biking at Mt. Ashwabay nearby.
The property began in the 1940s as a cottage built by the Alfred Duquette family, among the first local cottages with indoor plumbing, at $6 a night. Alfred's son Donald and his wife Cecilia took over in 1955 and added a three-unit motel, running it until the 1980s, after which it passed to Verdane Hansen and Larry Reiten and then to Mike and Jeanne Goodier, who added Bay West. Mollie and Isaac Carrier bought Seagull Bay in June 2017, moving from Minnesota and Hudson, Wisconsin to Isaac's hometown after their first son was born. They now run the motel with their staff while raising three boys and restoring the properties.
