Haas grew up on Long Island and earned an undergraduate degree in communications from Michigan State University in 1981. After finding real estate work unfulfilling and hearing repeated accounts of people mistreated by law enforcement, he enrolled at Nova Southeastern Law School in Fort Lauderdale, graduating in 1986 and joining the Fort Lauderdale public defender's office, where he tried cases and argued motions daily. He has practiced criminal defense exclusively since 1987 and opened his own firm in 1999, working as a sole practitioner since then.
