SMS Opt-In

This page documents how The Black Business Directory ("THEBBD") collects consent to send text messages, for anyone auditing our messaging program. The terms are in our SMS Terms and Conditions and the data handling is in our SMS Privacy Policy.

Program

The Black Business Directory — Business Claim Verification. A single transactional program: a one-time verification code sent to the phone number published on a business's own Google Business Profile, and updates about that claim. No marketing or promotional messages are sent on it, ever.

Where consent is collected

  1. A business owner visits thebbd.black.
  2. They open their own business's listing, which is unclaimed.
  3. They press "Claim This Business."
  4. On the claim form they enter the phone number published on that Google Business Profile, an email address, a link to the profile, and a screenshot of it.
  5. They tick the SMS consent checkbox reproduced below. It is not pre-selected, and the form submits without it.
  6. They press Submit. Only then is any message sent.

Consent is given directly to THEBBD, at the moment of the claim, by the person who owns the number. We never buy, rent, or import phone numbers, and we never message a number that has not been through this form.

What the form looks like

This is the consent control exactly as it appears on the claim form, shown in its default state — unchecked:

I agree to receive SMS text messages from THEBBD about this claim: a one-time verification code sent to my business's publicly listed phone number, and updates about the claim. Optional — you can submit without this.

Msg frequency varies (typically 1-3 per claim). Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help. Consent is not a condition of purchase. If you leave this unchecked we won't text you — your claim goes to a reviewer and we reply by email instead. See our SMS Terms and SMS Privacy Policy.

What is sent

Confirmation of the opt-in:

The Black Business Directory: You are now opted in to business claim verification messages. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.

The verification code:

The Black Business Directory: Verify with a six-digit code sent to *******9245. Enter code here 123456 to claim Ruby's Kitchen listing. Expires in 15 minutes. Do not share this code. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.

The outcome, once a reviewer has decided the claim:

The Black Business Directory: Verification for Ruby's Kitchen is approved. Check your email to set a password.

Message frequency varies, typically one to three messages per claim. THEBBD does not charge for these messages; message and data rates may apply.

Opting out, and help

Reply STOP to cancel. One final message confirms the opt-out, and no further texts are sent unless the owner opts in again by submitting a new claim.

Carriers are not liable for any delayed or undelivered messages.

Sharing

No mobile information is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent are excluded from all sharing and are not shared with any third party. The full detail is in our SMS Privacy Policy.
