About 100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc.
For over two decades, 100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc. has specialized in youth mentorship and leadership development for the San Antonio community, carrying out the national vision of 100 Black Men of America. The chapter's signature Saturday Mentoring Academy pairs middle and high school students with adult mentors for structured guidance in academics, character development, and life skills. Beyond weekly mentoring, the organization runs pre-apprentice training tracks in construction, healthcare, and information technology, giving young people a direct pipeline into skilled trades and technical careers. It also connects youth with internships, professional certifications, and job placement support, translating mentorship into tangible economic opportunity. Programs are built around four core pillars: mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment, reflecting the national organization's founding principles. The chapter partners with San Antonio schools, community organizations, and city leaders to identify students who would benefit most from sustained mentorship, and it maintains an annual operating budget in the range of $1.3 million to support its programming. Membership is open to professional Black men in the San Antonio area who want to give back through direct youth engagement rather than one-time volunteering. The organization's work is guided by its motto, "What They See is What They'll Be," emphasizing the importance of visible, present role models in shaping how young people see their own future possibilities. Through consistent, long-term mentoring relationships rather than short-term interventions, the chapter aims to keep students engaged in school, expose them to career paths they might not otherwise encounter, and build a pipeline of future community leaders in San Antonio.
100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc. was chartered in July 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, joining the national 100 Black Men of America network founded in 1963 by a group of Black professional men in New York City who wanted to improve conditions in their community through mentorship. The San Antonio chapter adopted that founding vision locally, focusing on youth mentorship and economic and educational opportunity for Black youth in the city. Over more than 20 years, the chapter has worked closely with local schools, community organizations, and city leadership to build out its Saturday Mentoring Academy and pre-apprentice training programs. What began as a small group of committed professional men has grown into an organization with a multimillion-dollar annual budget and structured programming spanning mentorship, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment. The chapter continues to operate under the national motto "What They See is What They'll Be," a reminder that its work is fundamentally about the example adult members set for the next generation.
