African goods store, Grocery store in Madison, WI
African and American Store is a family-run import shop on East Johnson Street on Madison's east side. Most shelves hold food from West Africa, including plantains, stockfish, palm oil, gari, cassava flour and halal products. The store also sells African fabrics, formal clothing, jewelry, djembe drums and personal-care goods such as shea butter, scented oils and raw black soap.
Guinea-born Mariama Diallo had run a corner grocery and an African import store in New York before the family moved to Madison, where she and her husband Mamadou opened this shop around 2005. It began as a standard corner store selling snacks and soda but switched to African imports within months when the American groceries did not sell. Their children help run the business.
