About AfroSpace

AfroSpace is a community clubhouse in Charlotte, North Carolina, built as a come-as-you-are homebase where community groups can gather, connect, and put on events. The space explicitly centers and welcomes Black women, girls, gays and theys, and allies of all shades, positioning itself as a gathering place rather than a typical commercial venue. AfroSpace's guiding philosophy draws on bell hooks' idea that one of the most vital ways people sustain themselves is by building communities of resistance, places where they know they are not alone, and that ethos runs through the space's programming. Groups that host a gathering at AfroSpace and return regularly can be invited to join the Community Partners program, which offers special perks, discounted rates, and promotional support to organizations that create quality experiences for their members. The space also runs a Cowork Club, a monthly group coworking meetup designed to help members share presence, stay focused, and get things done together, with some Friday sessions run as Cowork Club Takeovers led by Community Partners. Beyond recurring programming, AfroSpace is also available for private event bookings. The clubhouse is led by Devanne, who community members credit with bringing warmth and care to the space. Visitors describe AfroSpace's decor and atmosphere as standout features, with one member noting it was the perfect setting for hosting a photography workshop, and another praising the sense of belonging felt immediately upon entering. AfroSpace has built a reputation in Charlotte as a welcoming, values-driven space for community building.
