About Allegany Law

A nonprofit legal services program serving low-income residents and seniors of Allegany County, Maryland, in civil matters. Programs include pro bono attorney referrals, the Judicare program for contested family law cases, weekly Family Law Self-Help Clinics open to the public without income screening, foreclosure prevention, and eviction prevention for tenants facing nonpayment, breach of lease, or retaliatory eviction. Residents over 60 can receive free help with income maintenance, health care, housing, employment, landlord/tenant, and custody issues, plus wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, and some deed changes. Veterans living in Allegany County can have a simple will prepared free by a volunteer attorney, and estate planning clinics are held at county libraries.

The organization was founded by the Bar Association of Allegany County in 1997 and continues to be supported by its members through direct legal resources, donations, fundraising, and administrative services. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by grants from sources including the Maryland Legal Services Corporation, the Administrative Office of the Courts, and the Department of Housing and Community Development. Since 2008 it has worked with other Maryland legal services programs and housing counselors on foreclosure assistance.
