About Bedell Law Firm

A litigation boutique handling complex civil, criminal, and family law matters in state and federal courts, with practice areas that include appellate litigation, administrative proceedings, corporate investigations, criminal defense, estates and trust litigation, personal injury, professional malpractice defense, and real estate and land use disputes. The firm states that much of its work is referred by other law firms, and it keeps its size small enough to take on complicated cases directly. Attorneys have been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA, Florida Trend's Legal Elite, and Florida Super Lawyers, and three members are fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers. The firm has also taken on significant pro bono litigation, including matters for the City of Jacksonville and the Duval County School Board.

Founded in 1865 by Union Army Colonel Horatio Bisbee, the firm describes itself as the oldest law firm in continuous existence in Florida and marked its 160th year in 2025. Bisbee partnered with George Bedell in 1898, and in 1927 Bedell's son Chester joined as senior partner, forming Bedell & Bedell; Chester Bedell practiced for 57 years and received the American Bar Foundation Service Award in 1977. Because Chester Bedell never graduated from college or law school, firm attorneys traditionally do not hang their diplomas in their offices. The firm has occupied the former Jacksonville Free Public Library building since 1984 and now practices as Bedell, Dittmar, DeVault, Pillans & Coxe, P.A.
