Big Lou's Kitchen serves homestyle Southern food in downtown New Bern. Breakfast runs to pancakes, eggs, grits and sausage sandwiches. Lunch and dinner cover burgers, chicken philly, shrimp burgers, turkey chop sandwiches, wings and full plates with sides like mac and cheese, yams and cole slaw. Big Lou's Kitchen traces back to Mary Elizabeth Simmons, born in New Bern in 1933, a cook and longtime church and community volunteer. Her family once ran a restaurant on Green Street that was lost to a fire. Her grandson, a general contractor in New Bern, opened Big Lou's Kitchen one street over from where she lived, continuing the family's cooking tradition.
