About Blackwell's Farm

Blackwell's Farm is a 60-acre family farm in Rockingham County in North Carolina's Piedmont, near Reidsville. It raises pasture-raised Angus cattle that graze seasonal grasses and drink from freshwater wells, keeping a small herd of brood cows and a bull that produces calves for sale each year. The 2021 Ark Republic listing also notes hogs and chickens. The farm grows wheat, rye and specialty greens, and has sold daikon radish from its cover crops to a food box delivery service. Since 2019 it has used reduced tillage, cover crops, cattle fencing and erosion repair to rebuild soil on sloped pastures and hilltop fields. Buyers contact the farm directly by phone, email or Facebook; no farm store or website is published.

Beverly Bowen's parents bought the farm in 1945 and grew tobacco and other crops until the mid-1980s, after which the land was leased for cattle and hay and lost much of its topsoil. Beverly worked on the farm through her youth and college years before a 30-year management career. She returned in 2014 to revitalize the farm, drawing on USDA Farm Service Agency, N.C. A&T Cooperative Extension and N.C. Cattlemen's Association resources, and began reduced tillage and cover crops in 2019.
