About Bon Fritay Haitian Food Truck
Bon Fritay is a Haitian food truck working the Raleigh–Durham area, built around fritay: the deep-fried street food sold from roadside stands across Haiti. The truck spells out the pronunciation for you — fwee-tie — and describes it without ceremony as, simply put, street food. Chef Andre and Dafney run it, and neither arrived from a restaurant kitchen. She is a former newspaper journalist; he worked in the medical field. They now cook fritay across North Carolina together, and have added a permanent location, Katyé, at 2121 TW Alexander Drive in Morrisville. The menu keeps its Kreyòl names alongside the English. Fritay bowls come as griot, fried pork, or poule fri, fried chicken, each served with three fried sides, at $12 and $13. Rice bowls — diri ak pwa rouj avèk griot — arrive with Kreyòl sauce and a choice of plantains. The handhelds run smaller and cheaper: a Kreyòl sandwich of shredded chicken in Kreyòl sauce under seasoned mayo on a brioche bun, a stewed pork version at $8, bannan peze bòl, plantain cups stuffed with chicken or pork, at $4 to $5, and sosis, a beef hot dog fried and topped with pikliz, seasoned mayo or Kreyòl BBQ, at $3. Pikliz, the spicy pickled slaw that cuts through all that fry, comes with every fritay bowl. To drink there is Cola Couronne, the Haitian tropical soda, and ji sitwon, traditional limeade. The truck also caters, books private events, and sells its own fritay-inspired merch. Its greeting to customers is in Kreyòl: Nou pa ka tann rankontre ou epi nouri ou — we can't wait to meet you and feed you.
Katyé grew from food truck roots. Dafney and Andre Lafortune founded the first Haitian catering company in the Triangle in 2015, which became a popular food truck and later inspired a food festival that introduced Trevor Noah to Haitian food. "Katyé" means "neighborhood" in Haitian Creole.
