About Detroit Specials Used Books
A used bookstore in Detroit's North End stocking tens of thousands of gently used titles in-store and thousands more online, spanning fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and graphic novels for all ages, plus a curated selection of newer books. Nearly all inventory comes from donations by people downsizing and by organizations clearing space, which keeps books out of landfills and prices low; store credit is offered for donations, and larger Metro Detroit collections can be picked up. New books are added six days a week, with the biggest batches on Mondays and Tuesdays. The store keeps late hours, requires masks for in-store shoppers, offers free shipping on orders over $35, and has two resident rescue cats, Lily Boots and SPAAACE!.
Owner Dora Badger (they/them), a queer, nonbinary Mestizo, began selling used books in 2015 as a way to support their rescue animals, and it eventually became a full-time job and a storefront. A portion of all sales goes toward the shop's own rescue efforts and to Detroit animal rescue organizations. The store often fosters cats and kittens through Detroit Alley Cats and holds occasional events for other rescue groups.
