About Elk Run Winery

A Frederick County vineyard and winery producing red, white, rosé and dessert wines from roughly 25 acres of estate vines, including Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The site cites schist and shale soils, 800-foot elevations and densely planted, crop-controlled sustainable farming as the basis for its wines, and notes that Elk Run grows all the varieties it makes. Visitors can book tastings (reservations required for groups of eight or more), join a wine club, and attend free or low-cost live music on weekends and Friday evenings. The property is also rented out for weddings and other events, and the wines are distributed in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Fred Wilson, who studied under Constant Frank and worked harvests in upstate New York, founded Elk Run in 1979 with Carol Wilson and Neill Bassford after two years of searching the region around Washington, D.C., for a site with the right soil, sun exposure and altitude. The winery became bonded in 1983, and in 1980 the Wilsons planted what they describe as Maryland's first all-vinifera vineyard. The farm sits on Liberty Road near Libertytown; the winemaker's house dates to about 1756 and was a Colonial-era tavern, and a second vineyard planted in 1995 across the road takes its name from the property's "Resurvey of Cold Friday" land grant. In recent years Julian Wilson has taken on more of the field management and winemaking.
