About Ellen's Bakery & Cafe
A bakeshop and eatery producing scratch-made breads, pastries, and custom cakes, alongside breakfast and lunch service in the dining room. Owners Ellen and George Kalergis have run the bakery since 1999. Chef Ellen grew up in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., studied theater and art at Virginia Commonwealth University, and worked in a Blacksburg bakery for seven years before attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, in 1988. She externed at Ridgewells Caterer in Maryland under pastry mentor Chef Karl Meuller, then moved to Michigan to work at the Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids. She and George married in 1992 and settled in Sylvan Lake the following year.
