About Footprints in the Garden

Footprints in the Garden is a Black-Owned, women-led family farm in Mount Olive, Wayne County, North Carolina, on land the Martin family has farmed since 1883. It grows vegetables and fruit, including okra, kale, carrots, watermelons and blueberries, using cover crops and rotation. Customers can buy CSA boxes, find the farm at farmers markets and food hubs, or join its farm-to-table dinners and festivals.

Erin Martin's great-great-grandfather, Harry Martin, bought the land in 1883 after escaping slavery, and the farm earned Century Farm status in 2022. Erin became seventh-generation manager in 2018; her mother Carrie farms alongside her. The farm won the inaugural Carolinas Leopold Conservation Award in 2023, recognized for cover crops, micro-irrigation and forest management.
