Book store in Boston, MA
Frugal Bookstore has been a cornerstone of Boston's Roxbury neighborhood for more than 20 years, run by husband-and-wife owners Leonard Egerton and Clarrissa Cropper since 2008. Boston's only Black-owned bookstore, it carries new releases, African-American Studies, LatinX Heritage, and children's titles alongside a dedicated Children's Corner. The shop hosts author events, accepts consignment and private-event requests, and ships online orders with minimal packaging.
Leonard Egerton and Clarrissa Cropper opened Frugal Bookstore in 2008 with a clear mission: make literature accessible in a Roxbury neighborhood that had gone without a bookstore of its own. Running it together as a family business, they built Boston's only Black-owned bookstore into both a retail shop and a gathering place, expanding its shelves to cover African Diaspora history, anti-racist literature, and one of the city's largest BIPOC children's book collections.
