About Holland's

Classic country cooking served in-store, with country hams cooked on site in the restaurant's own ham room that have a following across southeastern Virginia. Scratch-made staples include chicken salad, collard greens, potato salad, hamburger steak and deviled eggs, many of them still overseen by longtime cook Mary Lou. To-go items are prepared fresh daily, and catering ranges from boxed lunches and picnic baskets to cakes, full feasts and Holland's Ham.

The business began as Holland's Produce, Inc. in the early 1960s, when the Holland parents grew their own produce and sold it at the Old City Market in downtown Suffolk. Emily Holland was among the first women in the area to work alongside her husband in the store daily, eventually taking over the business entirely. Produce growing has since given way to prepared country cuisine, in-store dining and full-scale catering, with the operation now run by Jeanette Holland after nearly 60 years in Suffolk.
