Book store, Coffee shop in Detroit, MI
Howard Family Bookstore occupies a once-abandoned building on Puritan Avenue that founder Jerjuan Howard, a west side Detroit native, purchased in June 2024 and rebuilt with family, friends, and neighbors. Billed as "Books. Community. Coffee. Tea," it stocks fiction, children's literature, motivational and educational titles from local and national Black authors, alongside a reading lounge and coffee bar. The shop hosts the Puritan Avenue Archive Project and a local-author partnership program.
Jerjuan Howard, creator of the Umoja Debate League, bought 13803 Puritan Avenue in June 2024 after the building had sat overlooked and forgotten for more than 25 years. Rather than hire it out, he rebuilt it with contributions of construction work and skills from family, friends, and community members, turning a long-abandoned storefront into a neighborhood bookstore, coffee bar, and gathering space centered on literacy and local history.
