Three of his children — Matt, Dan, and John — became lawyers and joined him in 2003; when Jim was elected to the Mississippi Supreme Court in 2008, John and Dan established Kitchens Law Firm, P.A., later rejoined by Matt and, in January 2025, by Jim after sixteen years on the high court. A Kitchens daughter, Rebecca Kitchens Thornton, serves as bookkeeper. The offices occupy a 19th-century vegetable packing shed later run as a wholesale grocery warehouse by Jim's parents, which the brothers bought and renovated to save from demolition.
