About La Unique African American Books & Culture Center

La Unique African American Bookstore & Cultural Center sells books and African-centered culture in downtown Camden. The shelves cover biography, history, religion, cooking, health, novels, sports and children's titles. The cultural center displays art prints, paintings, imported African sculpture, musical instruments, clothing and jewelry. It hosts "The Poets Den" with jazz musicians and poets, plus workshops, book signings, album release parties and civic meetings. Grab-and-go checkout, virtual events and gift cards are available.

Larry Miles founded La Unique in 1991 in downtown Camden, sensing a need for a culturally prominent presence there. The name combines "La", short for Larry, with "Unique". Miles grew up in Crisfield, Maryland and volunteered for military service in 1952. Revenue fell sharply during Covid-19, and he is now fundraising to renovate the building and keep the store operating.
