About Lee's Barbershop

Lee's Barbershop has been a fixture of Southeast Washington, D.C. since 1986, earning a reputation as "your personal hair expert" for nearly four decades of service to the community. The shop is led by master barber and owner Dr. Lee, whose passion for the trade took root in childhood: by age nine he already knew barbering was his calling. He trained through Ketchem Elementary School and Kramer Junior High before beginning his barbering career at Chamberlain Vocational High School, later distinguishing himself in cosmetology studies as the top student among thirty-five classmates. He earned his official barbering certification as an apprentice in 1978. In July 2007, Dr. Lee relocated the barbershop to its current permanent home at 4409 Bowen Road SE in Washington's Ward 7, a move that let him grow the business from nine barber chairs to fifteen. Alongside classic cuts, the shop expanded its menu to include braiding, loc maintenance, skin care, beard services, facials, ingrown hair removal, and massages. Lee's Barbershop notably offers experience providing haircuts for children on the autism spectrum, and extends special pricing to seniors and young children. Open seven days a week, the shop welcomes both walk-ins and appointments, and Dr. Lee has intentionally shaped it into more than a place for a haircut: it functions as a community hub for conversation and education, prioritizing professional, quality service for all members of the community in a highly respectful atmosphere, staffed by some of the most experienced barbers and stylists in the DMV.

Dr. Lee's path to owning one of Washington, D.C.'s most enduring barbershops began with a childhood realization: at just nine years old, he already knew barbering was what he wanted to do with his life. He pursued that calling through Ketchem Elementary School and Kramer Junior High School before formally starting his barbering career at Chamberlain Vocational High School. He went on to excel in cosmetology studies, finishing as the top student among thirty-five classmates, and received his official barbering certification as an apprentice in 1978. Dr. Lee opened Lee's Barbershop in 1986, and over the following decades built it into a Washington, D.C. institution. In July 2007, he moved the shop to its current, permanent location at 4409 Bowen Road SE in Ward 7, a turning point that allowed him to expand from nine chairs to fifteen and to broaden his services well beyond haircuts. Through it all, Dr. Lee has treated the barbershop as more than a business, deliberately cultivating it as a community hub where neighbors gather for conversation and education alongside their haircuts.
