Bookstores in Raleigh, NC
Liberation Station Bookstore is North Carolina's first Black-owned children's bookstore, operating in the Fifth Avenue district of downtown Raleigh at 430 Hill Street as both a retail shop and a community gathering space. The store specializes in carefully curated children's and young readers' books that center Black narratives and reflect the full breadth of the Black experience. Every title in the shop is read and vetted by the founder's family through multiple lenses before it earns a place on the shelves, an approach meant to ensure that what children encounter is both high quality and authentically representative. Beyond selling books, Liberation Station functions as a hub for Black joy and belonging, hosting story circles, author showcases, a recurring lecture series, and open mic nights, while also running literacy initiatives and a food and pad pantry for neighbors in need. The shop offers its space for community event rentals and actively supports independent Black authors through submission and showcase opportunities. What sets it apart is this dual identity: a working bookstore built around rigorous, values-driven curation, paired with a genuine commitment to community care that goes well beyond retail. Customers can browse in person Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., choosing from a selection built specifically so Black children can see themselves fully and beautifully reflected on the page.
Liberation Station was founded in 2019 by Victoria Scott-Miller, who started the project while searching for quality children's books that reflected the identities of her two sons. Unable to find enough options that met her standards, she began building a curated collection herself, reading and approving each title with her family through multiple lenses of the Black experience. What started as a personal, family-driven effort has since grown into what the store describes as a globally recognized children's bookstore, expanding from a single idea into multiple locations and an expanded slate of community programming, literacy work, and support for independent Black authors.
