About Loving Locks LLC

Loving Locks is a Sisterlocks® salon on North Haggerty Road in Plymouth, Michigan, owned by Janelle Weems. It works only with tightly textured natural hair, and everything is by appointment. The core services are establishment and retightening of Sisterlocks® and Brotherlocks, grooming, and Sisterlocks® XL. Weems is a Senior Trainer Associate, a Brand Ambassador and R-Certified, so the salon also teaches: a Sisterlocks® self-retightening class, a self-retightening class for interlocked and tooled locs, Styling Like A Pro, Lock Rescue & Maintenance, and mentorship sessions that run into a second module on running the business side. The building is also a workplace for other consultants. Loving Locks rents chair time by the hour at $10, or by the week at $250 for five days, $300 for six and $350 for seven, and rents whole suites monthly. Its service providers are given clients, scheduling software, mentoring, marketing and a health insurance option. Weems calls the group the Business Collective — separate businesses under one roof, sharing referrals and ideas. Loving Locks is independent, not a Sisterlocks® franchise, and sells Sisterlocks® products in its store.

Janelle Weems saw Sisterlocks® for the first time in 2007 and knew immediately she wanted them. She started her own locs that August and was certified as a consultant in July 2008. For years it ran alongside another life. She was a health inspector, and she built the business around a career, a marriage and children. She was R-Certified to teach retightening and named a Brand Ambassador in 2018, became a Trainer in 2019, and in 2020 left a twenty-year government job to do Sisterlocks® full time. In 2022 Dr. JoAnne Cornwell, who created the Sisterlocks® system, appointed her a Senior Trainer. Recognition followed. Loving Locks was named a 2024 SBDC Best Small Business by Michigan Celebrates Small Business, honoured at the 20th annual awards gala on May 21, 2024. Weems has since completed the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme, and is a member of the Michigan Black Business Alliance and International Natural Hair Standards. The training is what the salon has grown into. Students become mentees, mentees rent a chair, and chair renters become owners with their own suites.
