About Maggie's Wigs 4 Kids of Michigan, Inc

A Michigan 501(c)(3) that provides custom wigs and support services at no charge to children and teens ages 3 to 18 experiencing hair loss from cancer, alopecia, trichotillomania, burns and other conditions. Wigs are made in house from donated ponytails (10 to 12 per wig), custom-fitted, and individually cut and styled at the child's request, and each recipient also receives a full care kit and education on wig maintenance. The Wellness Center in St. Clair Shores adds educational and medical support services including art, music and drama therapy, tutoring, grooming courses, yoga and self-empowerment, counseling and field trips. Related programs include the Go Green Salon, the Creating a Total Image hair restoration program, hair donation drives and cut-a-thons, and advocacy for Michigan wig bills that would have insurers cover children's wigs as prosthetics.

Founder and CEO Maggie Varney is a licensed cosmetologist with more than 40 years in the beauty industry who volunteered with the American Cancer Society's "Look Good, Feel Better" program teaching patients to manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment. After meeting a young girl named Emily who needed a wig and finding no local program serving children, Varney founded Wigs 4 Kids in October 2003. The organization has served thousands of Michigan children since, and opened a new Wellness Center in 2020. Varney also operates Go Green, an eco-friendly full-service salon.
