About Melanated Wine

An urban winery and tasting room in the Southside Industrial Park, built for people the wine world has not usually spoken to. Two tastings are on offer: the Standard, which pours all seven of the house wines, and the Elevated, which adds a charcuterie board and a branded souvenir glass to keep. Both are led by staff who will explain what is in the glass without making it a test. Beyond tastings there is a food menu, charcuterie boards and cocktails, and the room hosts sip-and-paint and games nights. Private parties — birthdays, holidays, corporate events, wedding festivities and rehearsal dinners — are a large part of the business, with Monday to Wednesday reserved entirely for private events and rentals, and catering packages available. The wines and Melanated Swag merchandise ship nationwide through VinoShipper, and gift cards and a Wine Club membership are available. Open Thursday and Friday 5–9pm and Saturday 12–9pm; closed Sunday.

Melanated Wine opened on 22 October 2021 as Durham’s first Black-owned and woman-owned winery, in an industrial park on the city’s Southside. Founder LaShonda Fort-Modest, originally from Illinois, moved her family to North Carolina a decade before and built the business around a motto — "uncork the culture" — and a grievance: that grocery aisles, wine shops and vineyards had nothing in them that spoke to her. She learned the industry deliberately so she could take the complication out of buying wine for people who had been left out of it. The opening was covered by WRAL, ABC11, PBS NC’s North Carolina Weekend, The News & Observer and Travel Noire. Customers who buy from the site are welcomed as members of "the MelaNation".
