Southern soul food off a truck rather than a storefront. The board runs to BBQ chicken and ribs, fried chicken, fried fish and fresh seafood, with the sides made from scratch — macaroni and cheese, collard greens, potato salad, sweet potato casserole — and banana pudding to finish. Reviewers keep returning to the same two things: the seasoning, and the size of the plate for what it costs. Mr. Don’s signature BBQ sauce is bottled and sold. The truck moves around Durham and the wider Triangle, turning up at community events, grand openings and pop-ups, sometimes as far out as Gibsonville, often with live music alongside. Catering and event bookings are available; dates go fast.
Mr. Don’s Famous Chicken & Ribs is owned by Donald E. Brown Sr. and Roshaun A. Williams, both born and raised in Durham. Donald’s cooking came down from his parents and the elders in his community — spice blends, ingredients, sauces — and it was the reaction at family gatherings that convinced him to take it public. They first tried to launch a food truck in 2014–15, but serious health complications stopped it. After he recovered, Roshaun built a plan to revive it; they credit faith for holding on through the gap, and finally found a builder and opened in August 2023. Both are proud of Durham as Black Wall Street and as a centre of medicine and biotechnology beside RTP, while saying plainly that the community still yearns for greater harmony and unity.
