About Nashona

Modern silhouettes cut from vibrant Tanzanian cloth. The apparel is made from 100% wax cotton kangas and kitenges — no stretch at all, so the size chart matters — and runs to dresses, tops and kimonos, skirts, wide-leg trousers, jumpsuits and matching two-piece sets, all handcrafted in Tanzania and tagged "Made with ❤️ Tanzania". Beyond the rack, NASHONA will make a piece to order: choose your own fabric and your own style and it is tailored for you. The accessory side is substantial — more than 150 pieces of handmade beaded jewellery, beaded and embroidered bags and clutches, headwraps and scarves, plus kanga and kitenge sold by the piece. There is also a small bath and body range and original art. A portion of every sale funds educational scholarships and day-to-day running costs at the Shalom Children’s Orphanage in Karatu, Tanzania, which the team visits once a year, and the business employs Tanzanian women. Open Tuesday to Thursday 11am–5pm, Friday and Saturday 10am–7pm, Sunday noon–5pm; closed Monday. The shop is on West Hargett Street, walking distance from Moore Square.

Lilian K. Danieli founded NASHONA in 2012 — the name is Swahili for "I sew". A Tanzanian native settled in North Carolina, she built the line to merge two cultures, putting traditional African prints into modern shapes, and to serve both her local community and her home one. The business started in Goldsboro; she came to downtown Raleigh after running pop-ups in the city and being surprised by the reception. NASHONA now runs on a team of Tanzanian makers, retailers and brand ambassadors, and a portion of every sale goes to the Shalom Children’s Orphanage in Karatu, Tanzania, funding scholarships and daily operations. Her prints have been picked up by celebrities including Tabitha Brown, and the shop has been covered by ABC11 and Downtown Raleigh.
