About National Association-Negro Business
A national nonprofit membership organization working to promote and protect the interests of African American business and professional women, with local clubs and regional districts across the country. Programs include scholarships, education and training through L.E.T. Institutes, Google Career Certificates, the Mary E. Singletary Vocal Arts Competition for Emerging Artists, and a Youth Division for students and young adults. Members build leadership, governance, and parliamentary skills while carrying out community service, and an International Affairs Division works in Africa, the Caribbean, and other global communities. Membership is open to women of all ages, college students, and youth.
The idea for a national organization of business and professional women came from Emma Odessa Young, a New York City realtor and member of the New York Club of Business and Professional Women, in 1934. In July 1935, New York Club president Ollie Chinn Porter invited local Business and Professional Women's Clubs to form a national body, with founders drawn from New York City, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City. The first convention was held in Atlantic City July 9-11, 1936, at Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church, where Ollie Chinn Porter was elected first national president. The organization has since expanded its community service work well beyond its original purpose.
