Non-profit organization, Professional association in Sacramento, CA
The National Association of Black Bookstores (NAB²) is a membership-based nonprofit founded on Juneteenth 2025 to serve as the national advocate and clearinghouse for Black-owned bookstores. Led by a founding board of long-standing Black bookseller-owners, NAB² provides professional resources, leverages collective buying power, and works to grow Black participation in the bookselling industry. It publishes the State of the Black Bookstore Report and a national directory of Black-owned bookstores.
NAB² launched on Juneteenth 2025 as the first national organization built specifically for Black bookstore owners, formed by a board that includes proprietors of some of the country's oldest Black-owned bookstores, several now in their third, fourth, or fifth generation of family ownership. Its inaugural State of the Black Bookstore Report and National Black-Owned Bookstore Directory mapped hundreds of shops nationwide, giving the community data and visibility it had never had in one place before.
