About National Black Growers Council

The National Black Growers Council is a nonprofit of multigenerational Black row crop farmers working to improve the efficiency, productivity and sustainability of Black farming operations. Its first members met in 2008, and it advocates for Black farmers locally, statewide and nationally. A board of 12 farmers in 11 southern states guides it, and it offers membership, farm field days, an annual meeting and awards.

The council grew out of a December 2008 meeting of eleven row crop farmers at Monsanto's headquarters. Pearlie Reed and Dr. Dewayne Goldmon had spent eighteen months listening to Black farmers across the Southeast, after Monsanto's 2007 purchase of Delta and Pine Land raised questions about its impact on them. That gathering became a lasting national organization of Black growers.
