About S&B Farm

S&B Farm (Stanford and Bean Farm) is an 88-acre family farm in Eufaula, Alabama, run by Jewell and Russell Bean. The land includes cropland, pasture and forest. Livestock is managed on about 20 acres, and the main enterprises have been meat goats and vegetables such as collards, turnips, kale and broccoli, grown with plasticulture and hoop houses. The farm also raises pigs, chickens, cows, ducks, turkeys and rabbits and has grown peppers, melons and strawberries. The Beans used USDA's EQIP program to improve water quality and soil health. The farm hosts in-person and virtual workshops for small and beginning farmers on regenerative farming, enterprise budgets, record keeping, business planning, marketing and produce safety, with a certificate for completing six or more sessions. It works with Tuskegee, Alabama A&M and Auburn universities.

The land has been in Jewell Bean's family, the Stanfords, for more than a century; her father and grandfather farmed it. In 2008 Jewell and Russell Bean left urban careers in Georgia's Lake Oconee area and moved to Eufaula to care for her ill father and revive the farm. They took an agricultural leadership course and used USDA programs and land-grant university advice to build the operation. In 2016 they received the national Lloyd Wright Small Farmer of the Year award from the National Organization of Professional Black NRCS Employees, and Alabama NRCS named them 2017 Small Farmers of the Year.
