About Sailrite
A retailer of fabric and sewing supplies for DIY projects on boats, in homes, and for auto and RV work, stocking over 16,000 items including marine and outdoor fabrics from Sattler, Sunbrella, Outdura and Cordura, plus notions, hardware, tools, adhesives, cordage, foam, leather, window material and DIY kits for covers, sails, bags and window treatments. The company makes its own machines, including the Ultrafeed LS and LSZ walking foot portables, the Fabricator table-mounted line and a Leatherwork machine, which are assembled, tuned and tested at its Indiana facility. An extensive how-to section offers instructional videos, project guides, selection guides and a fabric calculator.
The business began in 1969 after founders Jim and Connie Grant took an interest in building their own sails. Needing sails for the Cal 20 National regatta that a local sailmaker could not deliver in time, Jim bought the material, made a full set himself and placed second in the regatta. Interest from other sailors led Jim, a college professor, to sell a correspondence course on sailmaking, which grew into the company. Originally focused on the marine industry, it later expanded into powerboats, pontoons, outdoor living, home décor, auto and RV upholstery, hobby projects and leatherwork, and introduced a new logo in 2015.
