About Shepherdstown Community Club

A volunteer-run 501(c)(3) service organization that maintains two community spaces: the War Memorial Building at 102 East German Street and Morgan's Grove Park. Both are available for rentals, and the club hosts events and activities including the Back Alley Garden Tour & Tea and the Legendary Book Sale. Programming also includes Bee City participation, partnerships with other local organizations, and a stated commitment to a nondiscriminatory, accessible environment for members, guests, volunteers, and renters.

The group began as the Men's Club of Shepherdstown, formed in 1945 as a successor to the local Lions Club, with a core group of community leaders meeting on February 1st of that year to set out resolutions that still underpin the current by-laws and mission. In 1946 the club agreed to purchase the 1868 Methodist Episcopal Church building at 102 East German Street, dedicating it in 1947 as the War Memorial Building in memory of those lost in World War II. The club purchased Morgan's Grove Park in 1961 and has since worked to preserve its heritage as the departure point of the 1775 Beeline March, a site the Secretary of the Army designated in 1988 for its role as the birthplace of the United States Army.
