Cattle farm, Farm in Owensville, MO
Shire Gate Farm is a grass-fed cattle farm of roughly 500 to 600 acres near Owensville, Missouri, about an hour from St. Louis in northwest Crawford County. Owner Will Witherspoon raises British White Park cattle entirely on grass, without growth hormones or antibiotics. The beef earned Animal Welfare Approved certification in 2010, and the farm was also certified by the American Grassfed Association. Laying hens forage on the pastures and help control biting flies. The farm sells about 40 to 50 head a year. The land includes forest, a creek bottom and a pond that drains to the Bourbeuse River, and has been offered for seasonal dove hunts through LandTrust.
Will Witherspoon bought the property in 2007, while playing linebacker for the St. Louis Rams. He meant it as a country home for his family and two Shire horses, Rocky and Simon, which inspired the farm's name. A tax advisor suggested starting with two or three cattle, but he began with 16 head. He chose White Park cattle for their docility and suitability for grass-based production. In 2010 the farm earned Animal Welfare Approved certification. His teammates ate the farm's ribeyes in the Rams' dining hall. He runs the farm with his wife Rebecca and their three daughters.
