Bakery in Charleston, SC
A family-run bakery making hand-made gourmet tea cookies in four flavors: Charleston Benne Wafers (sesame), Charleston Pecan shortbread with Georgia pecans, Lemon Coolers with fresh lemon zest, and old-fashioned gingersnaps based on a Norwegian recipe. Cookies are made with butter, eggs, sugar, flour and natural ingredients, without palm oil, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, dyes or artificial ingredients. Boxes, bags and variety packs are sold at a table in the Historic Charleston City Market, at Saturday farmers markets in Charleston and Summerville, online for shipping, and by pickup or delivery order. Cookies are also supplied for hotel guest rooms, weddings, showers, luncheons and party favors, and the bakery offers breakfast and lunch items such as bagels, salads, sandwiches, dogs and knishes.
The owners previously ran The Charleston Cookie Company in downtown Charleston for almost a decade. A Benne Wafer distributor challenged them to make a better version, so they researched historical Charleston and Savannah cookbooks and developed their own formula over six to eight weeks, and have been selling the wafers for over 30 years, adding pecan, lemon and gingersnap flavors afterward. The bakery is named for the owner's two daughters, Jackie and Sarah, who were 3 and 4 when the first cookie store opened, and many employees have been with the company 20 to 30 years.
