A CPA and director in the tax and business accounting services departments at Harper, Rains, Knight & Company, P.A., handling tax services and client accounting services for medical practices, retail stores, law firms, insurance companies, construction and real estate, and trucking and logistics companies. More than thirty years as a CPA covering small business accounting and both business and personal income tax preparation. Over twenty years of work in bankruptcy and insolvency accounting and tax matters, including service as a chapter 7 and chapter 11 bankruptcy trustee and as an examiner in bankruptcy cases. Member of the AICPA, the Mississippi Society of CPAs, and the Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference, where he serves as Executive Director and a board member.

Before public accounting, Stephen Smith worked for the Mississippi State Tax Commission (now the Department of Revenue) in several roles, including membership on the Board of Review that decided state tax appeals, and later for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Jackson Office of the United States Trustee. He owned and operated his own CPA firm in Jackson before combining that practice with Harper, Rains, Knight & Company, P.A., where he has been for three years as an owner and director. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Mississippi College. The firm itself was established in 1994 through the merger of two local CPA firms and is based in Ridgeland with an additional office in Washington, DC.
