The business was founded by two Black women who wanted to save time for themselves and other women with textured hair, building what they call a nurturing, protective community space rather than just a salon. Swella describes its mission as redefining braiding by delivering a luxury, convenient, and stress-free experience, aiming for results that are as beautiful and protective as the style itself. Services include knotless box braids, cornrows, Fulani and tribal braids, and touch-up or takedown appointments, with optional scalp cleanse and blow-dry add-ons. Premium synthetic braiding hair in a range of colors is included in every service at no extra charge, and hypoallergenic hair upgrades are available for clients with sensitive scalps. The salon operates as an all-in-one service, meaning clients don't need to pre-wash or prep their hair before arriving. The space itself is designed to feel like a retreat, with high-speed Wi-Fi, complimentary tea, and popcorn for guests who settle in for longer braiding sessions. Swella also created BraidPass, which it markets as the first and only annual braid membership program of its kind, giving regular clients a structured way to book recurring appointments. The company has expanded to multiple locations and runs a waitlist connecting customers in underserved neighborhoods with Swella Approved Braiders.
