Produce market, Grocery delivery service, Food producer in Durham, NC
Tall Grass Food Box is a Black-Owned produce subscription based in Durham that puts fresh food from Black farmers across North Carolina into a box every other week. Founded in March 2020 by Gabrielle E. W. Carter, Derrick Beasley and Gerald C. Harris, it exists to keep Black farmers visible and to secure them space in the local marketplace. Each seasonal share feeds one to two people, or one person cooking three or more times a week, and the offerings change week to week. Subscriptions are pay-as-you-go and charged biweekly, with a limited number of one-off boxes sold each week. Boxes are picked up on Saturdays at partner sites in Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Cary. By November 2020 the project had already paid more than $34,000 directly to Black farmers.
Tall Grass Food Box started in March 2020, in the first weeks of the pandemic, after co-founder Gabrielle E. W. Carter talked with a restaurant-owner friend facing closure and saw how exposed farmers were in the supply chain. The three founders began pulling produce together from Black farmers across North Carolina and selling it as a subscription box across the Triangle. Within eight months the project had paid more than $34,000 to Black farmers, and its work has been covered by NPR, ABC11, WUNC and Scalawag.
