About The Black Pearl Nail Academy
The Black Pearl Nail Academy trains manicurists in Memphis and calls itself Tennessee's first independent, full-service manicure school. Programs include a traditional 600-hour manicure course, an apprenticeship track, a Master Instructor program for licensed professionals of three or more years, skills upgrade training for licensed barbers, cosmetologists and nail techs, and state board refresher courses. Instruction combines classroom theory, practical work and business skills, with a focus on BIPOC and under-resourced learners.
Duriya' Caldwell founded the school in 2018, drawing on over 30 years in the manicure industry. The goal was to let students specialize as manicurists without completing a full cosmetology program, and to earn a license beyond apprenticeship that transfers more easily between states. The academy plans to add nail suites for licensed manicurists, estheticians and lash specialists, plus conference space and PSI testing space.
