About The Lantern Bookshop
A used and rare bookshop in Georgetown stocked entirely with donated material, ranging from hardbacks and paperbacks to postcards, maps, prints, LPs, CDs, DVDs, and books on tape. Rare titles are also listed online through ABE. The shop is staffed by volunteers, does not buy books or perform appraisals, and accepts donations of up to three boxes or bags at a time, with tax-deductible receipts. All profits go to Bryn Mawr College to fund students' summer internships.
The shop was founded in 1977 by local alumna Diana Morgan Laylin Young (Bryn Mawr College class of 1935), starting in a donated space on M Street. It moved to P Street in 1996 and owns that location. Most volunteers are local Bryn Mawr alumnae, and the shop has raised more than $730,000 for women attending the college, earning the Helen Taft Manning Award for service to the College in 1981. A sister shop, the Bryn Mawr Bookstore, operates in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
