About The Potter's House Café & Bookstore

A nonprofit Pay-What-You-Can café and bookstore in Adams Morgan with a mission of providing good food and conversation to all, regardless of means. The café's food, inspired by the hospitality of Mary Easley, centers comfort dishes, and the space hosts events and is available for event rental. Nonprofit programs include Pay it Forward, a daily meal program run with food donation partner Food Rescue DC, and Page it Forward, which provides discounted and free children's books. As of the current site notice, the café's coffee, tea, bakery and food service has ended and the location is closed until further notice, though the bookstore continues online as Adams Morgan's oldest locally owned bookstore.

The Potter's House opened in 1960 as a coffeehouse church, created so people would have a comfortable place to ask deep, spiritual questions at every table. Beginning as both restaurant and congregation meeting house, it offered a judgment-free space where strangers could become friends over food and conversation, and by the mid-1960s the coffeehouse congregation model had spread nationally. Over the decades it worked as a partner and gathering place in Adams Morgan, connected to the founding of neighborhood nonprofits including Unity Health Care, Christ House, Sarah's Circle, Mary's Center and Sitar Arts Center. More recently it separated from its religious background to become its own nonprofit organization.
