April Berry began The Velvet Bar in spring 2020, baking out of a two-bedroom apartment while still working full-time at Delta Dental and moonlighting as a hairstylist. A self-taught baker and Florida native who relocated to Atlanta, Berry started experimenting with a red velvet cake recipe that would eventually become her signature: the now-famous 24-Layer Red Velvet Champagne Cake. Word of the cake spread, and a feature on Breakfast at Barney's helped introduce her desserts to a much wider audience, including celebrities and politicians. Encouraged by the demand, Berry took the leap from home-based baking to opening her first physical storefront in July 2021 in Riverside, part of Atlanta's Upper West Midtown area. The business has remained a family affair, with her husband, mother, aunt, and son all pitching in along the way. Berry has continued to grow the brand while staying rooted in giving back, partnering with local youth organizations and schools to mentor the next generation of aspiring bakers and entrepreneurs.
