He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, a past chairman of the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section's Board of Governors, and the 2016 recipient of the Betty A. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award. His son Wes B. Witmeyer, a Randolph-Macon College and Appalachian School of Law graduate, has practiced alongside him for more than a decade and chairs the Hanover Bar Association's Wills for Heroes Program, which drafts estate documents for county first responders at no charge.
