The building that houses Vault Brewing Company has stood in downtown Yardley since 1889, originally constructed for Yardley National Bank. The bank operated there for decades before going under during the Great Depression, and after passing through other uses over the following decades, the building sat vacant starting in 2009. Brothers James and John Cain founded Vault Brewing Company in 2012 with the goal of bringing big-city craft beer energy to the Philadelphia suburbs, and they found their home in the empty bank building, restoring rather than gutting its early-1900s details. High ceilings, marble columns, and ornate period finishes remain intact throughout the space, while the old teller windows and grates now wrap around the bar and server stations, a functional nod to the room's original purpose. Fittingly, the kegs are stored in the bank's original vault, giving the brewery both its name and its most literal piece of history on display. What could have been another demolished small-town bank building instead became a working brewery and gastropub, turning 125-plus years of architecture into the backdrop for pizza, pub food, and house-brewed beer. The result is a rare case where the building's past and its present use reinforce each other rather than competing.
