Way Fruit Farm traces its roots to 1792, when Jane and Caleb Way began farming Pennsylvania's Halfmoon Valley, and to 1826, when the family formally established the fruit operation that still bears their name. The apple orchard at the center of the farm's identity began in 1872 as a wedding gift: when Robert A. Way married Lucretia Fisher, her father — himself in the apple business — gave the couple 1,000 apple trees to start their own. Robert expanded the operation in the 1880s, building the farm's first apple storage building and hauling barrels by horse and wagon to sell in nearby Philipsburg, later shipping fruit by rail all the way to Philadelphia. Nearly two centuries later, Way Fruit Farm is now in its sixth generation, run today by Jason Coopey and Megan Way Coopey, descendants of the original Way family. What began as a single wedding gift of apple trees has grown into a diversified farm market near Penn State growing apples, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, sweet corn, and pumpkins, alongside a bakery and cafe. The farm's endurance through six generations, two centuries, and the transition from horse-drawn wagons to modern retail makes it one of the oldest continuously family-run fruit operations in central Pennsylvania.
