5ive12Nails is a by-appointment nail studio on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in Atlanta's West End, where Rey works alone. Full sets begin at $65 for gel in any shape, short to medium. Marbled, ombré and marble-ombré sets are $90 and up. An acrylic overlay on the natural nail is $60. Fills start at $50, quoted on the condition of the nail and any repairs it needs. There is a men's manicure, the MANicure, finished with a clear gel top coat. Extra length is added on: $5 medium, $10 long, $20 XL. Two ways to book a design. Choose a personalised set and you bring the idea — two designs, one per hand, $70 to $85, and she asks you to arrive knowing what you want. Choose a freestyle and you pick only length and shape; everything else is hers. Freestyles run $90 to $150 depending on length. Fills and soak-offs are for her own work only. Booking is online, and she asks that questions come by text rather than DM.

Reyvon Shemo taught herself to do nails. She graduated from Savannah State University with a degree she has never used, though she credits the place for the people she met there. The art came from home — her grandmother raised her in an artistic household, and her mother taught her that the work you do should be work you can be proud of. After college none of that had a shape yet. She moved through several jobs without finding one that held. Then she looked at the beauty industry, decided that was where she would build something, ruled out lashes, ruled out hair, and settled on nails. Nobody trained her. What she built is a studio where clients hand her the decision. In a freestyle booking they choose length and shape and nothing else; the design is hers. She is clear-eyed about the cost of working for herself: "It has never been easy being my own boss, having to pay to work, having slow work weeks, and dealing with different people everyday." And about where it has left her: "At the end of the day I'm lucky to be here and have a talent that supports my life."
